Directional control valves are precisely manufactured control units. They are to be treated carefully
during transportation and mounting and protected against falls and vibrations.
Attention!
• The surface of the solenoid can be very hot with continuous operation! Risk of injury!
• Valves with NO function are not opened without control voltage. In case of start-up fuses are
to provide against possible exhausting fluid. The valves are not frost resisting with freezable
fluids. Leak and strength tests with opened or closed valves are permitted up to one and a
half times of the maximum operating pressure. The valve is not allowed to be switched
during these tests.
• Ground conductor port is vitally important! The ground conductor has to be connected with
the terminal provided and indicated. Plugs are only allowed to be connected in dead
condition! Alternating voltage solenoids are damaged when operating in non-plugged
condition (without axial conduit and solenoid inductor)!
• Exhaust ports may not be fully throttled, as this can cause malfunction of the valve.
1.0 Use according to regulations
For the safe function and danger-free application of this solenoid valve the permissible data and
indications stated in these operating and maintenance instructions have to be observed.
An application exceeding the limits permitted as well as the non-observance of these operating
instructions are in contrary to the regulations. The user is solely liable for damages resulting from
this. In case of incorrect interferences and modifications of the valve as well as not complying with
the operating instructions, the warranty expires and our liability is excluded. The valve is only
allowed to be operated with fluids not affecting the materials used in a chemical or mechanical
way and/or released by Norgren-Herion.
2.0 Safety instructions
The safety instructions only refer to the individual solenoid valve. Other danger potentials can arise
in combination with other components, which have to be observed using a danger analysis to the
plant.
Before start-up it has to be ensured, that no endangerment is proceeded with the initial electrical
actuation of the exhausting fluid from unsecured openings.
3.0 Compressed air
Control valves are only to be applied according to regulations. Control valves may only be
operated using prepared compressed air, quality class 1 2 3, according to ISO 8573-1.
The appropriate regulations for prevention of accidents and valid bodies of rules and regulations
are to be observed. With compressed air controls, special observation has to be given to the
cleanness and oil content in the air. The front part of a maintenance unit is recommended, which
consists of pressure control valve and oiler, and in case of condensate accummulation it has an
additional water separator.
With freezable liquids the valves are to protect against frost or the liquid is to be discharged, if
there exists danger of frost.
4.0 Outdoor mounting/plant sided
With outdoor mounting only the appropriate control valves and solenoids for this purpose are
allowed to be used. In case of outdoor application with security requirement according to DIN
3394/1 or EN954-1 only valves and solenoids holding the corresponding admission are allowed to
be employed.
Otherwise, preventive measures (e. g. built in switch cabinet) have to be taken against
environmental effects. Avoid blockade of exhaust tube caused by nesting insects or frozen
condensed water e. g.
Exhaust tubes have to possess an internal diameter of 100 mm as well as a slightly inclined
or funnel shaped, widened tube end.

5.0 Mounting
Before mounting it has to be verified whether the technical data stated on the rating plate and/or
in the product description concerning operating pressure, voltage, current type, power
consumption as well as the application and environmental temperature comply with
the existing operating conditions.
In case of directional control valves for compressed air (controlled air) with exhaust on the pilot
control into the atmosphere, the statistical minimum pressure has to be existent on the supply
port P. Versions operating with auxiliary energy, as an option, the supply is carried out via an
additional foreign fluid port Z. It is strictly forbidden to use the solenoid as lever arm or climbing
aid. For valves possessing 3, 4, or 5 controlled ports the connections are designated accordingly.
They are to be connected according to the respective switching symbol. The valve closes only in
flow direction densely. Flow stream against the flow direction can lead to the destruction of
construction units. The preferred mounting position is "solenoid perpendicularly upward".
Thereby, the wear and danger of pollution is smaller.
6.0 Maintenance
Maintenance, inspection, and assembly works are only allowed to be executed by authorized and
qualified specialized staff. In principle, the execution of work on the solenoid valve is to be done in
an unpressurized and cooled down condition. In this case the solenoid has to be separated from
the voltage supply. Preventing maintenance depending on the operating conditions and with
noticeable change of the switching times is recommended. The operator accounts for the
stipulation of appropriate testing and maintenance intervalls depending on the operating condition
of the valve. Deposits, dirt, aged or worn seals can lead to malfunctions. The seals on the
solenoids are to be included for adhering the protection class.
5.1 Mounting interface according to NAMUR’s recommendations concerning part-turn
valve actuator
When mounting the control valves, the drilling template on the part-turn valve actuator is
valid (Fig. 1). For indirect mounting of control valves using pilot wires, two tapped bores G
1/4 as per DIN/ISO 228-1 are provided in the air supply channels of the part-turn valve
actuators. For the direct flanging of the control valves, basically four fastening holes M5x8
exist in the flange illustration, whereby one tapped bore serves for the acceptance of a
coding set screw M5x10, rustresistent. The sealing is effected by means of O-rings 16x2,
whose imbedding is in the housing of the control valves. The flange illustration is
constructed in a reversed image, so that a functional reversal at the main armature can be
achieved with a turn of 180 ° by the solenoid valves. Being able to execute this specifically,
the solenoid valves are also equipped with a coding lowering besides the two fastening
bores. By means of a coding set screw a torsional safety is obtained. With the initial
mounting the coding set screw is inserted in the corresponding bore on the flange
illustration of the part-turn valve actuator in such a way, that the requested switching
function is obtained, if the coding set screw finds space in the specified coding identation
of the valve. If there is a discrepancy between the coding set screw and the coding
identation, no impermeability is obtained at the mounting interface. A modification can only
be excecuted by a competent service engineer.
O-rings, fastening screws, and the coding set screw belong to the supply scope of the
control valve (Fig. 2). A major advantage with this flange illustration is due to the fact, that
there is no difference between the 3/2 and 5/2 port valves. Both control ports of the
actuator are used. In case of single-acting actuators the port of the actuator which remains
to be free is used for the reaeration of the spring area by means of the escaping control
fluid.
The mounting is to be executed carefully and cleanly. No foreign substances, such as
packaging residues, remnants of sealing materials, welding scales, sand, or chips caused
by damaged and/or inappropriate threads are allowed to get into the wires and/or valves. It
is recommended to build a dirt trap in front of the valves.
In safety controls assigned elements are to be verified in fixed time intervals regarding
condition and efficiency. This includes the control of all parts regarding wear and functional
testings. The time intervals depend on the operating conditions such as fluid contamination,
switching frequency, operating time, pressure and temperature. These factors of influence
can shorten the requested maintenance intervals depending on the individual effectiveness
or combination.

7.0 Electrical connection
Before executing the connection it has to be verified, whether the power data indicated (tension
as well as type of current) are in conformance.
First of all, take care of main voltage and frequency. If the connecting terminals are marked
attention has to be paid on the correct polarity, otherwise the conductors can be connected
optionally. Solenoids of the protection class I possess a ground conductor connection which is
included in the marking.
Solenoids with cable tails have a ground conductor. In any case has the ground conductor to be
connected. The pin and socket connectors are only allowed to be plugged or released in dead
condition. The provided protection system is to be produced by careful closing of the connection
space (observe correct position of the cover), using the original sealing materials). This also
applies for cable fittings and plugs.
8.0 Identification CE
International and national standards and regulations are taken by Norgren Herion as a basis for
development, construction, and production. In order to make the free goods traffic particularly
possible in the European Union, the Council has issued common guidelines for the European
market. These give minimum requirements for security and health protection. Products, which are
subject to such guidelines and fulfilling these requirements, i.e. being conform with the relevant,
especially harmonized standards are to provide with the identification CE.
This is not a quality characteristic but it is addressed to the responsible authorities. On request a
conformity explanation issued by the manufacturer (or its commissioner in the EC) is to present.
For solenoids the low-voltage guidelines and the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) guidelines
come into consideration.

8.1 Indications concerning the guideline 73/23/EC - (low-voltage guideline)
All solenoids as well as limit switches for position indications have been developed,
designed, and manufactured under consideration of the standard "Solenoid Devices" DIN
VDE 0580. Thus, requirements of low voltage guide line are fulfilled valid for low voltages of
50...1000 VAC and 75....1500 VDC. Electronic sensors are not subject to this guideline due
to its tension level.
8.2 Indications concerning the guideline 89/336/EC - (electromagnetic compatibility -
EMC)
Solenoids as actuator elements for valves as well as indications of switching positions are
not subject to the obligation of identification CE, since they do not represent independent
actuating devices and they can only be processed and/or mounted into a machine by
specialized enterprises.
Start-up is forbidden until it has been stated, that whole machine and/or plant corresponds
to the regulations of the EMC guideline. These requirements taken from the EMC guideline
affect both the interference emission and the resistance against interference. Regardless of
the obligation of identification CE, we noticed concerning measurements, that all solenoids
comply with the requirements of the specialized basic standards for interference,
interference emission (EN 50081 – 1) and resistance against interference (EN 50081-1), and
for noise immunity (EN 50082 2) as well as in living, business and commercial areas and in
small enterprises.
8.3 Application area of machine guidelines 98/37/EC
Control valves comply with the fundamental safety requirement of EC machine guidelines
98/37/EC. The valves are electrical operating facilities in the sense of the EC machine
guidelines. Only the solenoids released in accordance with the data sheet are to be used.
8.4 Application area of pressure device guideline 97/23/EC
Control valves are equipment items in the sense of the pressure device guideline 97/23/EC.
If an application is intended as equipment item with safety function, only design tested and
according to module D certifed devices are allowed to be used. Information can be
obtained in the corresponding product data sheet.
